Fun things to cook with the kids this Easter
School holidays can be fun, but they can also be challenging especially when we are all self-isolating. The kids get bored, they’re not using up excess energy and before you know it the whole family can be feeling frustrated. There isn’t a single solution for these crazy times, but there are fun things to do that might help pass the time.
Yes that’s right bread making, the joy of which, for many of us has been long-forgotten. From the wonderful aroma and delicious taste there are few foods that deliver the sheer delight that warm, freshly baked bread brings. A crunchy fresh loaf is a joy the whole family can share and during these crazy times, what can be better at relieving children’s boredom than the fun that comes with kneading dough?
Making bread is fun, super easy and the comforting aroma wafting through the house is something the whole family can share.
Here’s a couple of recipes to get the fun started. Don’t forget to wash your hands first.
½ plain flour
1 sachet about 6g dried yeast
1 tsp salt
1 ½ cups (375mL) warm water
Simply mix the flour, yeast and salt together, make a well in the centre, add the water and mix to combine, then tip out onto a clean bench and kneed for about 10 minutes (longer if you’re having fun) Shape it into a ball, put into a large bowl and cover with a tea towel. Then leave it for about an hour for the magic to happen, it should have doubled in size in this time, if not leave it a little longer. When it has doubled in size punch it to release the gas – doesn’t that feel good? Knead again for a couple of minutes until dough is back to original size. Then shape into two round loaves place on a greased baking tray and let it rest while you heat the oven to 200C. Place in the middle of the oven for 30 minutes, you can check that it is cooked by tapping on the base of a loaf, if it sounds hollow its cooked. Place on a wire rack to cool – if it lasts that long.
