An apple a day

An apple a day

Now don’t quote me on this, but apparently the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is over 150 years old. With first references made to this saying in the mid 19th century. So I guess if a saying has been around for that long there may be some truth in it, and perhaps we should all try to eat an apple a day.

Apples are generally a good budget buy and although best from late spring until winter they can be kept in cold storage for long periods, making them available all year round. Apples, like lots of  fruits and vegetables have a lower calorie density than packaged snack foods meaning that they are great to eat regularly as part of a healthy balanced diet.

As adults we know the benefits of eating fruit but the kids might not find apples so appealing and even find it difficult to get the kids to eat a whole apple everyday, so here are some ideas of other ways that you can get your daily fix.

First up, why not make an apple sauce, this doesn’t have to be just for pork,  instead  add a little sage and serve it with chicken for a tangy lift.  Add a little cider vinegar and it will keep sealed in the fridge for up to a week. Meaning you can make large quantities.

Another tasty way to eat apples is in the classic Waldorf salad. Simply combine, sliced celery, apples and walnuts with mayonnaise to replicate the original recipe created at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York and dating back to 1896.

Finally,  try mixing grated apple with carrot and onion for your very own apple slaw.
